Social Media & the Modern Writing World

It’s fascinating to live in a time when social media shapes so much of the writing world. In some ways, it feels strange. Shouldn’t stories stand on their own? Shouldn’t the work speak for itself? But really, it makes perfect sense. Social media shapes how we connect, how we learn, how we share, and how we build community almost everywhere else. Writing is no exception.

I’ve discovered just how integral a social media presence has become. Many publishers won’t seriously consider a writer unless they already have an active online presence and many followers. It creates this odd loop: you need social media to get a book deal, but you need a book to grow a social media account. It’s a circle that feels both logical and completely backward at the same time.

Starting from scratch can be discouraging. It’s hard not to compare your five little reels to someone else’s thousand. I know they started from zero too, but that doesn’t always quiet the feeling of being miles behind before you’ve even begun.

And now, on top of writing, I’ve essentially taken on a second hobby: building a social media presence! It’s both fun and scary, and it takes far more time and effort than I expected. Some days, I feel a little resentful of it because, honestly, I could be working on one of my books right now. But this is the world we’re in, and I’m learning to see it not as a burden, but as another way to share stories, connect with readers, and grow alongside other writers who are figuring it out too.
