Writing Closed-Door Romance: Chemistry Without the Spice

Writing Closed-Door Romance
In romance writing, you’ll often hear categories such as clean, just-kisses, no-spice, low-spice, closed-door, and fade-to-black. Interpretations of these vary between authors and also readers, but they all essentially promise the same thing: no explicit sexual details on the page.
I write closed-door romance across eras and genres. Closed-door doesn’t mean there’s no chemistry. There absolutely is “Did it just get hotter in here?” energy in my novels. It simply means the story offers a non-explicit, low-steam reading experience where any sexual activity (if it happens at all) takes place off screen.
The terms closed-door and fade-to-black are often used interchangeably. Fade-to-black usually means the scene cuts right before intimacy. Closed-door can mean the same, or it can mean intimacy happens but the details stay private and undescribed.
In my books, I don’t avoid intimacy, and I don’t treat it as shameful. When I write intimate moments, they’re always between characters who are married. If they’re not married, you can expect fantastic kisses and tender moments but nothing that requires a door or even a strategically-placed hat.
I believe sexual intimacy in marriage is beautiful, meaningful, and deeply bonding. Honestly, I think we need more books and movies that portray a healthy sense of sexuality in marriage. I just believe that intimacy (fictional or real) belongs to the couple themselves. I don’t feel the need to describe every detail like I’m writing a field guide.
When writing, I use subtle cues like “sometime later” or a hero caressing his wife’s bare shoulder while they talk about something that actually matters to the plot. What happened in that “sometime” interval, or why is his wife’s shoulder bare? That’s for them to know, and we can just appreciate the gentle implication. It’s intimacy without any graphic description, written in a way I’d feel comfortable letting my own mother read.
Closed-door romance lets me lean into the heart of the story, where the magic is in the relationship. It’s in trust, vulnerability, and emotional connection between my characters. You, the reader, can enjoy the novel without having to worry about unexpected spice. So, while you won’t find sexually explicit detail in my books, you will absolutely get plenty of swoon.
